Facebook, in cooperation with several other technology companies, will lay a fiber-optic cable under the Atlantic Ocean, which will significantly increase the speed of Internet connections. It is reported by CBC News.
Work on laying the transatlantic undersea telecommunications cable on the ocean floor near the Canadian province of Nova Scotia should begin this week.
It is noted that the cable is 6,600 km long and about 4 cm thick. It will connect the town of Len in Massachusetts, Bordeaux in France and Cornwall in Britain.
Facebook owns 80 percent of the cable, with Microsoft and Vodafone as partners.
Part of the cable will pass through a region that may soon be designated a marine sanctuary, a fact of concern to environmentalists.
At the same time, the company, which is engaged in the laying, assures that the cable will have minimal impact on the environment.
